Fun with Littles
With all the yucky stuff we have to deal with as survivors, its important to take time out to just have fun. Especially with our littles. Littles especially need time to play because they didn't get to when the body was little. Playing and doing fun things teaches lots of important skills for living, and helps your littles begin to feel safe which lets them start to heal. That's why our littles have helped us make this list of lots and lots of things you and your littles can do to take time out and just have fun. Be sure to share the experience with them. Also, if you have outside children who know about your insiders, let them play too.

1.Take a walk outside. Just around your house or to the park, it doesn't matter. Look at nice things like pretty birds and butterflies. Smell the flowers. Feel the sunshine on your face. Listen to all the different sounds. Also, you can pick things up along the way, pretty rocks, leaves, feathers and make a collage when you get home
2. Go to a library or book store. Pick a book or two. When you get home curl up in your favorite chair with stuffies, blankets, anything special. Have a special drink or snack (we like hot chocolate and marshmallows), and read together.
3. Get our your pens and paper, crayons, markers, stickers, anything else you have and draw and draw and draw!
4. Animals! Have a play with your pets or take a trip to the zoo or a pet shop. If you have a camera take lots of pictures to remind you what you saw.
5. Have a picnic. You can do this in a park, at the zoo, your backyard, or even your lounge room floor! Pack a good healthy lunch, but bring some junk food too. And don't worry about being messy. Its fun to make a mess and it can always be cleaned up later.
6. Play with toys. Barbies, Hotwheels, anything your littles have and enjoy. And if you don't have it outside, you can always decide to have it inside! Taking trips to toy stores can be fun too. If you can buy new toys, great, if not, decide which ones you like and make them appear inside!
7. Watch a movie or cartoons. Once a week or so, instead of watching the news or a grown up movie over dinner, watch cartoons or a kids movie. You can even make it a really special dinner and fix the kids favorite foods (for us that means nuggets and chips).
8. Go to a museum. Littles, just like outside children, never stop being curious. Museums are a great way to let them learn and explore. If you are afraid for people to notice, take your own kids or a friend's along. They'll have a great time and no one will be the wiser. Oh, and call your local museum ahead of time. Many museums have a free or half price day, once a week or once a month for area residents to encourage people to come. Those days will be more crowded, but it's easier on your wallet.
9. Play online games. This is a great, safe, and private way to give your littles some time. See our Littles Links page for some ideas.
10. Listen to music. Most littles love music, so sometimes you can let them pick it. They may like regular music or kids' music. If you are stuck for ideas for kids' music, some of our favorites are Disney, Raffi, and VeggieTales (does have religious themes). Also most music stores/sites will have compilations of lots of different types of kids' music.
11. Plants. If you have room, plant a garden or take care of some potted plants. If not, take your littles to a nursery or botanical gardens. Look at the pretty colors and smell the different scents. Oh, and if the boys find bugs, give them time to look at them.
