Honoring and Remembering Lost Loved Ones
When a loved one leaves, one of the most comforting things you can do is to ensure that they will be remembered, that their life is appreciated and that they receive the honor they deserve. Unfortunately though, that can be harder than it sounds. So, we've compiled a list of ideas. Not every idea works for every person or situation and some may only be able to do with some distance from the loss. Others may work for you with a little bit of creativity to alter them to fit your situation.
  • Release balloons with messages about your loved one attached. It is a symbol of letting them go and at the same time ensures people all over the area will spare a moment to think of your loved one.
  • Make a scrapbook of favorite pictures and memories. Be sure to write about them as the memories will fade in time.
  • Plant a flower or garden in their memory.
  • Create a memory space. Part of a wall, a shelf, a corner of the garden, and fill it with memories. Pictures, writings, statues, anything that reminds you of your loved one.
  • Make a memorial donation to your loved one's favorite charity (or yours if they didn't have one).
  • Create traditions. Holidays and special occasions can be an especially difficult time. Create new traditions (and continue old ones) that help you remember, like making your loved one's favorite meal or adding memorial decorations to your normal collection.
  • Web memorials. Create a place online for your loved one's memory. Add them to our Angels page and/or to any of these Memorial Sites. For examples of other web memorials, Click Here
  • Write. Poetry, letters, music, anything. Write out your memories, your love, your grief, get it out on paper. If you can't write it, draw it, paint it or sculpt it.
  • Write their biography. It doesn't matter whether what they did was "great" or not. Write it down. Let other people in on it. It will help them to contribute.
